Sheriff Tad Toomey led his horse out of the yard to find seven men waiting at the mouth of the alley to join him. This small response to his request for a posse made him feel angry. But he suppressed the urge to berate the rest of the men standing around, and approached Ben Cullard.

“I’m leavin’ you in charge while I’m away. See Lampert and Nathan are buried and do what you can to quieten Joel and his sister. And make sure Joel doesn’t follow us.”

When Cullard answered with a nod, the sheriff swung into the saddle, checked his posse again, then kneed his horse into a run. He knew he had a long and dangerous ride in front of him, and apart from worrying about what lay ahead when he caught up with Jud Drury and Cobb Blaney, he didn’t like the thought of riding all the way across what was commonly called Hell’s Trail.

It had been a year since he’d been called on to travel to Creede, and he still had vivid memories of the heat, the lack of water and shade, and the seemingly endless desolation which could make any man feel he had reached hell’s doors. But he intended to succeed in this manhunt, even if it meant he had to travel beyond the border towns where his badge would be an open invitation to the local hellions.

Leaving Pardoo, he led the posse south, and although it was only an hour after sunup, the heat was so intense, he knew that by noon he and his companions would be burned to a crisp.

So, a mile out of town, he called a halt and brought the men together. His posse consisted of five young men of the hell-raising breed, two oldsters, Brad Browne, a self-confessed unambitious prospector, and Chance Larkin, a one-time riverboat gambler and now a saloon loafer whose stories of the ‘good old days’ became less credible with each new telling. To the men, he said gravely;

“We’re huntin’ two killers of the worst kind, so when we catch up with them, nobody has to play by any rules. When you see them, shoot to kill. I’ll take all the responsibility after that.”

“Ben said they was nothin’ but backshootin’, sneaky low lifers,” Browne offered.

“An apt description,” Toomey agreed. “But I reckon there’s more of ’em and all of ’em’s mean. They killed Nathan cold and that’s what you’ve all got to keep in mind. There’ll be nothin’ to be gained by talkin’ to ’em.”

“What about Halliday?” Larkin asked. “Nathan came into the saloon before he visited you, Tad, and offered good money for somebody to ride with him. Nathan said Halliday raped his girl.”

Toomey looked sternly at the man, and said;

“Forget Halliday. We’re after Blaney and Drury.”

Larkin exchanged a quick glance with Browne, who shifted his horse closer to the sheriff and said, gruffly;

“Nathan offered a hunnert dollars a man, and that ain’t chicken feed.”

Toomey became suddenly impatient with both of them. “Nathan’s dead and can’t pay you a dime, can he? But no matter.
